Mass spectrometry can be used to study a wide range of biological problems.  We use both MALDI and ESI ionization techniques and apply them to a broad spectrum of sample types. However, the main focus of our work is on using proteomics-type analysis techniques to identify the proteins present in a sample. This can range from relatively routine analysis of simple samples, through to the quantitative analysis of complex mixtures of proteins, looking for those proteins whose expression levels have been altered by the experimental conditions.  Another important area of our work is in mapping sites of modification by interpretation of peptide fragmentation patterns. We collaborate with researchers both internal and external to St Andrews, working closely with them to use our methods to answer their scientific questions.
