Neurophotonics at the nanoscale

Dr Juan Varela's Research Group

Home

Our lab in the University of St. Andrews is part of the School of Biology, the Biomedical Science Research Complex and the Centre of Biophotonics.

We develop high-resolution microscopy strategies to study the brain at the nanoscale, using fluorescent nanoparticles and organic dyes. Our aim is to harmonize super-resolution imaging techniques with in vivo models.

The three main axes of research in our lab are:

  • Protein aggregation in neurodegeneration
  • Interactions between protein aggregates and neurotransmitter receptors
  • Clearance of protein aggregates from the extracellular space of the brain
