Light-based innovation for the biosciences

Dr Michael Mazilu is a Senior Lecturer at the University of St Andrews with a background in semiconductor physics, photonic crystals and biophotonics. He is currently working in the fields of optical micromanipulation, medical imaging, nonlinear  physical acoustics, non-linear single photon generation  and  structured illumination. His research is at the interface between theory and experiment and he has pioneered the field of optical eigenmode decomposition for structured light that led to a number of papers, patents and invited talks at major international conferences such as OSA Imaging and Applied Optics, and SPIE Photonics West.

Research areas:

  • Structured orthogonal illumination
  • Linear and non-linear ultrasound sensing
