Dr Jacqueline Nairn gave a presentation on ‘Embedding Equality and Diversity into Biology Tutorials’ to the 2019 Annual Teaching Biology in Higher Education Network hosted by the University of the West of Scotland on 27th August 2019. This was attended by teaching focussed staff from the Universities of Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, St Andrews and West of Scotland.
As we strive for a Gold Athena SWAN Award, the E&D committee was keen to share our best practices. The School of Biology received the Silver Athena SWAN Award at the ceremony in Swansea in July 2018 and the ceremony programme highlighted our School of Biology undergraduate tutorials on ‘Unconscious Bias and Disability Issues’ as good practice. Jacqueline outlined our current tutorials and the development of our E&D focussed tutorials on Bias & the Job Application Process, Public Engagement, Teamwork and Sample Selection. There was a lengthy discussion following this presentation with interest in the skills gained by the tutees, and a proposal that students could develop future E&D focussed tutorial topics. Following the presentation, Jacqueline was invited to the School of Life Sciences at the University of Glasgow with a view to organising similar activities for the Biology undergraduates at Glasgow. The slides from the presentation are available here.
